A coalition of local residents advocating for safer, more reliable roads across SLO County.
Securing reliable local funding for the roads, bridges, transit, and mobility services every resident depends on.
Better Roads for all SLO County is a coalition of local residents advocating for safer, more reliable roads across our county.
Our goal is simple: secure funding for safe roads, efficient travel options, and transportation that supports daily life, emergency access, and our local economy for residents of all ages and abilities.
Across our county, roads, bridges, and other infrastructure are aging and becoming increasingly difficult to maintain. State and federal transportation funding has become less reliable and harder to access, making it harder to maintain and improve our local roads. Gas tax revenues are declining, and construction costs continue to rise. Without a stable, locally controlled solution, road conditions will continue to worsen — slowing emergency response times and limiting mobility, especially for seniors, people with disabilities, and those who rely on public transportation.
Meanwhile, nearly 89% of Californians already live in "Self-Help" counties that have approved local transportation funding measures. These counties receive priority access to state and federal grants, while San Luis Obispo County is increasingly left behind.
Without becoming a Self-Help county, we cannot fairly compete for billions of dollars in available transportation funding, putting our safety, economy, and infrastructure at risk.
Our Plan
That's why Better Roads for all is supporting Measure H, a ½-cent, locally controlled transportation sales tax. This measure would create a reliable funding source used exclusively for transportation improvements in San Luis Obispo County. Funds would be invested according to a voter-approved Transportation Expenditure Plan, supporting:
- Repair and maintenance of local streets, roads, and highways
- Traffic congestion relief and safety upgrades
- Improved public transportation services
- Mobility enhancements for seniors, veterans, and people with disabilities
- Safe Routes to School projects
- Bicycle and pedestrian safety and connectivity
- Local matching funds to compete for state and federal transportation grants
Built-in Accountability
To guarantee transparency, accountability, and local control, the measure includes:
- An independent citizens' oversight committee
- Annual public reporting
- Independent financial audits
- Strict limits on administrative costs
- Maintenance-of-effort requirements to ensure funds supplement, not replace, existing transportation dollars
Better Roads for all is committed to ensuring San Luis Obispo County has the safe, modern, and reliable transportation system our communities deserve. Together, we can secure local control over local transportation dollars and build a stronger future for everyone who calls this county home.
